The Sign of the Beaver (1983), a children’s novel by American author Elizabeth George Speare, is about twelve-year-old Matt James Hallowell, who settles in the Maine wilderness with his father in the eighteenth century. When his father leaves to go pick up the rest of the family, Matt is left to guard their cabin and land. He is able to survive with the help of a Native American boy named

The Sign of the Beaver was inspired by a true story dating from 1802 and documented in a history of the small town of Milo, Maine; in it, a teenage boy left to care for his family's cabin was helped by the local Natives when his supplies were ravaged by a bear. Saknis stared at it. "It's for you," Matt said. "It's a gift. Please take it." Saknis reached out and took the book in his hand.

Another important similarity is that Attean gave Matt I found that The Sign of the Beaver is a great example of two important things. First, the book shows that a young boy can learn to adapt and survive in the wilderness when left alone. Second, the book shows how Native Americans and settlers can get along with each other when they respect each other.
